Urban Agriculture

Urban agriculture comes in many forms: urban farms (commercial ventures that sell food), community gardens (which enable people to grow food for their own consumption), backyard gardens (which can be used for either purpose), and public property-based gardens (such as school gardens). These small-scale agricultural enterprises help foster the development of a sustainable, local, food-growing system in Los Angeles, plus a host of additional benefits. As the former mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, once stated, “Urban agriculture is about far more than growing vegetables on an empty lot. It’s about revitalizing and transforming unused public spaces, connecting city residents with their neighborhoods in a new way and promoting healthier eating and living for everyone.” A groundswell of grassroots initiatives toward growing food in the Los Angeles region have revealed a need for new programs and comprehensive policy reforms that will make it easier for the population to engage in urban agriculture. The organizations listed below work towards this goal by facilitating collaboration, research and policy changes to legalize and structurally support urban agriculture, through financing, zoning and community engagement.
