Overview of Food System Issues

Food Systems & Land Use Policies

The overarching structure of our food system coupled with existing government land use policies can have a major influence on the kinds of food that we put on our tables and how it gets there. A number of organizations are focused on advancing systemic change to make good food more plentiful and accessible throughout the Los Angeles region. These organizations work collaboratively with stakeholders from across the food system to develop and implement programs and policies that advance the interconnected goals of smarter local and regional land-use, community economic development, equity, public health, and environmental sustainability. The issues they work on can vary widely, such as agricultural and urban land use policy, environmental conservation, food distribution and access, workers’ rights, and public health.
