Rachel Surls is the Sustainable Food Systems Advisor for University of California Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County. Cooperative Extension is part of the UC’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. As Sustainable Food Systems Advisor, she conducts research and extends information on a variety of food systems topics, including community and school gardens and urban agriculture. She provides supervision for UC Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver Volunteer Programs in Los Angeles County. Rachel earned her BS in agronomy at Virginia Tech, her MS in Agricultural Sciences at Cal Poly, Pomona, and a Ph.D. in Education from Claremont Graduate University. Rachel is a former Peace Corps Volunteer and parent of two teenage boys. She enjoys local history and is working on a book about the history of farming in Los Angeles.
